Statement From Irv Neger, Senior Vice President, Apparel, Sears
SEARS TO LAUNCH EXCLUSIVE APPAREL LINE BY LL COOL J
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., May 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Irv Neger, Senior Vice President, Sears Apparel, issued the following
statement:
As part of an ongoing commitment to increase our relevance in the
apparel industry, and bring fashions to our customers that are both
on-trend and affordable, Sears will be rolling out an exclusive LL Cool J
clothing collection in its fall assortment. The collaboration between LL
Cool J and Sears is the result of significant research on our part to
choose an aspirational label that can be accessible to all. Key
considerations in this selection included choosing a persona that had broad
demographic appeal, representing the true cross-section of the American
public that Sears embodies, and working with someone who would be committed
to making the good life attainable to our customers.
Not only is LL Cool J a pop culture phenomenon, his legitimacy and his
talent have stood the test of time. His career has spanned more than two
decades, culminating in 10 platinum albums, two Grammy awards and an NAACP
Image Award in recognition of his contributions. His staying power and his
wide appeal are evidenced in many upcoming endeavors that will include the
debut of his 13th album, a new television series, and film opportunities.
In essence, we wanted a brand that would resonate with an existing
customer who desired authentic streetwear, and LL Cool J wanted an American
icon retailer to which he could entrust his name and his vision.
Both LL Cool J and Sears have a history of being originators. As such,
LL Cool J's line will speak to that shared story as well as reflect his
artistry, his invention of an industry in addition to his longevity in
multimedia, and his commitment to his family. This synergy will bring
meaning to many facets of our marketing campaigns going forward as LL Cool
J becomes the face of a new, strengthened product portfolio at Sears. The
line will initially be carried in 450 stores with plans for increased
distribution by holiday. Clothing will first be offered in juniors', kids',
and young men's, with future plans for expansion to include accessories.
This rollout signals our belief in the offering as well as our recognition
of a need customers have to create an entire, authentic look. Apparel will
hit stores across the country during the second week of September.
LL Cool J issued the following comment:
"I see the LL Cool J brand bringing families closer together. It was a
priority for me to launch with a partner who connects with all of America
and Sears does it best. One of the happiest times I can remember was my
grandfather taking me to Sears every weekend when I was a child. I am
pleased to bring an authentic brand to Sears customers across the county
who represent those people and family members who influenced the person I
am today."

The Secret Life Of Bees, the special closing night screening, written for the
screen and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and stars Queen Latifah (the
Festival's Honorary Chair), Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and
Sophie Okonedo. A touching story about the need for love, family and
redemption, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES explores our undeniable desire for a
sense of belonging and the often daunting journeys that we must navigate to
achieve it. Set in South Carolina during the turbulent Civil Rights era, the
home of the intelligent and independent honey-making Boatwright sisters
(Latifah, Keys and Okonedo) is suddenly thrust into upheaval with the arrival
of fourteen year-old Lily Owens (Fanning) and her caretaker Rosaleen (Hudson).
Surrounded by the unexpected comforts, grace and deep rooted spirituality
Lily (Fanning) encounters in the Boatwright home, she forms a maternal bond
with each of these women whose unique and special gifts help reconcile the
loss of her mother. Lily ultimately comes to the realization that sometimes
you must leave home in order to find it. The film is scheduled for
nationwide release on October 17, 2008.

Jackie Chan- UNICEF AMBASSADOR SINCE 2004
Action star Jackie Chan has received a special UNICEF award for his work with children.
Chan was a guest at a UNICEF reception held in China on August 9, where awards were presented to UNICEF supporting partners and goodwill ambassadors who have aided the organization’s efforts to help children all over the world. HOUSTON'S MADD HATTA HELPS 100 KIDS GET FLY FOR 1ST DAY BACK AT SCHOOL - TEAMS WITH JAMES POSEY'S BACK 2 SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND
HOUSTON'S MADD HATTA HELPS 100 KIDS GET FLY FOR 1ST DAY BACK AT SCHOOL - TEAMS WITH JAMES POSEY'S BACK 2 SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND
Fact: The percentage of black men who have not graduated from high school has quadrupled over the past 60 years.
Fact: 60% of the black males who drop out of school will end up behind bars
Fact: Black males in the their early 30's are twice as likely to have prison records as bachelor's degrees
Fact: Only 3 out of 10 black males entering kindergarten will graduate from college
Houston, TX - Most of you will recall the night before the first day of school; laying out your new outfit and imagining all the compliments you would get when you saw all of your friends that day. While sitting in church a few Sundays ago, 97.9 The Box morning show host, Madd Hatta, heard his pastor tell his congregation that "children who did not have a new outfit on the first day of school, and were therefore not dressed for success, were far less likely to have a successful school year." That statement stuck in his head, along with the above statistics and he decided he wanted do something to help. Hatta called his good friends at local shopping mecca Suitmart and thus, Hatta's 100 was born.
Young males in Houston from grades 6 - 8 were encouraged to submit a 100 word essay on how they planned to 'keep it 100' in school and the winning 100 kids will be taken to Suitmart this coming Wednesday, August 20th where Hatta will buy them each a new outfit for their first day back in school. Additionally, upon hearing Hatta speak on the air about what he was doing for the kids, former Celtic, James Posey, who was already doing a back to school event as part of his Back 2 School Championship Weekend, invited Hatta's 100 to participate. Posey and 15 of his All Star buddies will be on hand at Grooves restaurant from 12PM - 3PM Saturday, August 23rd to meet with 500 kids, Hatta's 100 included, where they will receive not only some All Star Inspiration, but a backpack filled with school supplies.
"I heard what Hatta was trying to do for the kids and it occurred to me that kids who could not afford new clothes for the start of school were probably struggling with school supplies as well. I already had an event I was doing for 400 kids so we just added Hatta's 100 to that event." James Posey says.
"Often in life it's the small things that make a difference and it's up to each of us to find a way to be the catalyst for change. Because life is always about choices, I made the choice to help 100 male students from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades start their school year off the right way......dressed for success." Hatta states, and adds......"I would like to thank both my friends at Suitmart, and James Posey for seeing my vision and helping me to make these things possible."

Feature Foundation: TJ DUCKETT's Foundation

Welcome to the TD Foundation
TJ Duckett has established a foundation to positively impact youth and families who have lost loved ones to cancer with providing assistance to those who are currently living with cancer. As a son of a cancer victim, TJ knows first-hand the challenges families face when treatment becomes necessary as employment. The TD Foundation wants to help patients focus on living with cancer instead of dying from it-- to turn cancer patients into cancer survivors.
As a member of the Detroit Lions , all players are encouraged to get involved in charitable organizations and to give back to the community. TJ has taken it one step further by establishing the TD Foundation. For many years TJ has actively supported cancer research and awareness projects but now he wants to personally provide resources and assistance that he feels would have made a significant difference to his family while they were struggling to live with his mother’s illness.
The American Cancer Society estimates in 2007 that there will be over 1.5 million new cases of cancer diagnosed and that 559,650 people are expected to die of cancer, more than 1500 a day. Cancer has a lasting impression on patients, friends and loved ones. Some have just been diagnosed or are going through treatment, while others no longer have active symptoms of cancer or are considered cured. Today, cure rates continue to improve as new medicines and treatments are discovered. Join Team Duckett as we strive to assist organizations in the fight to cure cancer.

‘Maddenpalooza’ Rocks Rose Bowl
For thousands of gaming enthusiasts, the big day had finally arrived. On Monday, avid players of the hit video game Madden NFL 09 swarmed into the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the most popular video gaming franchise in sports history.
But hard-core fans weren’t the only ones there.
“I used to be good at Madden back when you only needed three buttons to play,” retired NFL star Warren Sapp said.
While Sapp’s best Madden playing days may be behind him, the future is bright for EA Sports and its signature game. The launch of Madden, themed “Maddenpalooza,” gave fans the opportunity of a lifetime at this gaming and music-based festival/event—a first look at the highly anticipated Madden NFL 09.
The strong relationship between Electronic Arts and NFL PLAYERS, the marketing and licensing subsidiary of the NFLPA, was on display Monday as “Maddenpalooza” featured more than a dozen former NFL superstars including Marshall Faulk, Eric Dickerson, Warren Moon and Eddie George, the first Madden cover athlete. This unique interaction allowed fans to experience the launch of the franchise’s 20th iteration in grand style.
Peter Moore, President of EA Sports, said, “The launch of Madden NFL 09 is of a magnitude that only the Rose Bowl can accommodate.”
The fan-fest atmosphere offered a player autograph stage, more than 300 gaming kiosks, football long-toss competitions and free beverage tents. Kicking off the day, fans were treated to musical performances by Rev Theory and Airborne, two bands whose music has been featured on the game’s soundtracks.
“To have an event at an historical place like the Rose Bowl and to go outside and see the huge tarp of artwork draping the whole stadium is incredible. Madden has become synonymous with the NFL,” said ex-Chicago Bears wide receiver Willie Gault.
Fans flocked to the Rose Bowl, grabbing their place in long lines as early as 3 a.m. on Aug. 11, in order to guarantee themselves a chance to play and buy the first available copies of the game. One of those loyal fans, Pasadena resident Jonathan Martinez, could hardly contain his excitement.
“I came out today just to get Madden NFL 09,” he said. “I’ve been playing since 1989 and I’m really hoping to play against some former NFL players. I couldn’t miss this.”
Faulk, the cover athlete for the 2003 version of Madden, put into perspective the impact of the game on its fans. “They love this game, they want this game, they do everything for this game. If you drop this game on the field, and just gave one out to everyone, it would cause a riot,” Faulk said.
The pre-launch buildup ended with a bang as Good Charlotte and Busta Rhymes amped up the crowd just hours before the sale of the first game. In an adjacent Wal-Mart store made specifically for the event, the first fans to purchase a copy—Jessica Didway and Fernando Aragno from Hacienda Heights, Calif.—were showered in confetti and presented the first sale by former San Francisco 49ers great Roger Craig.
With millions of pre-ordered copies for this year’s game, the first 20 years of the Madden franchise has been a rousing success. And if the popularity of “Maddenpalooza” is an indication of things to come, it will only continue to get bigger.
History of Madden
Dating back to 1989, when it debuted on the Apple II, the Madden franchise has grown tremendously over its 20 years of existence. Despite the original game’s unchartered success, the sentiment from retailers and EA alike was to not move forward with a sequel. Undeterred, and with a change of heart, the game continued to evolve. EA made its biggest splash with its 1995 edition, the first game which featured an NFL PLAYERS (then PLAYERS INC) license, which granted the rights of all active NFL players for use in the game.
NFL PLAYERS COO Andy Feffer reinforced the enthusiasm of partnering with EA Sports over the past 14 years. “We are thrilled to be partners with the leaders in the video game industry,” Feffer said.
A Player’s Game, Too
As fans gave their feedback on the game, the group of former NFL players in attendance discussed a wide range of topics about Madden and showed that when it comes to video games, the real players are big fans, too.
Longtime Buffalo Bills great Andre Reed, who had his 12-year-old son with him, noticed that “kids are going crazy” over the game. Dickerson, he of the 2,000-rushing yard season, said, “I love to play. It’s just like playing real football.”
Meanwhile, Moon, also a fan of the game, offered one critique: “They need a bigger controller. These people don’t realize how many broken and jammed fingers I had in my career,” Moon said. And perhaps George summed it up best when he explained, “When you walk into a room, I’m not sure if it is a real NFL game on the television screen or Madden.”

Union Plus Provides Support for Education
The NFLPA’s involvement in the Union Plus program provides members with various opportunities available to them and their children, including scholarships.
“Students are eligible for various union-sponsored scholarships,” said NFLPA Union Privilege Liaison Christie Gagnon. “It’s a great way to help make continuing education more affordable.”
For more than a decade, the Union Plus Scholarship Program, offered through the Union Plus Education Foundation, has supported working families pursuing post-secondary education. There are currently four types of scholarships offered, all of which target different needs: the Union Plus Scholarship, Union Leaders of the Future Scholarship, Union Plus National Labor College Scholarship, and Nationwide Scholarship Search. All are available to family members of dues-paying union members in good standing. The 2009 scholarship applications will be available through the Union Plus website in September 2008.
“In addition to our player development department, which offers career and continuing education guidance, the Union Plus scholarship opportunities and College Planning Center are excellent resources available through Union Plus,” said Gagnon. “These tools are available to our active and retired members and their children, and we hope to increase the awareness and use of these educational tools amongst our membership.”
The College Planning Center provides family members with career assessments as well as assistance with the completion of college admission forms. To help simplify the timeline of the college application process, the center breaks it up into several segments: discovering, selecting, deciding, preparing, applying and paying.

Mourning Receives Community Assist Award for July!!
NEW YORK, August 14, 2008 – Miami HEAT center Alonzo Mourning has been named the recipient of the NBA Community Assist Award for July, in recognition of his outstanding efforts in the community and for his ongoing philanthropic and charitable work.
The seven-time NBA All-Star and well-known philanthropist is being honored for the success of his 12th annual “Zo’s Summer Groove,” held last month in Miami, Florida. This year, Mourning joined forces with his teammate Dwyane Wade and his Wade’s World Foundation, raising money to support a variety of educational programs in the greater Miami area. Thousands of participants turned out for the weeklong event, which included a golf tournament, concert, benefit dinner, youth summit, basketball clinic and a star-studded basketball game that closed out the festivities.
“My passion and commitment to provide kids with the tools they need to succeed is as strong as when I started Alonzo Mourning Charities in 1997,” said Mourning. “Zo’s Summer Groove, our largest fundraiser, has truly been a fun, community-centered effort that provides many programs with the financial support needed to make education a priority.”
Through AM Charities, Mourning’s community assistance continues year-round. Since 1997, the organization has donated millions of dollars to support existing youth programs and toward creating youth enrichment centers, including the Overtown Youth Center in South Florida. Mourning opened the Center in 2003, and today it continues to provide children with a safe environment in which to learn and excel. Another major component of the Alonzo Mourning Charities is the Honey Shine Mentoring Program, which strives to empower young girls through biweekly workshops and summer camps, promoting positive body image, a strong sense of self and helps members to develop into happy, healthy adults.
This marks the second time that Mourning has been named the recipient of the NBA Community Assist Award. He last won the honor in July 2006.
As July’s NBA Community Assist Award recipient, Mourning will receive the David Robinson Plaque, with the inscription, “Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson who improved the community piece by piece.” In addition, a $5,000 donation will be given by the NBA to the Alonzo Mourning Charities.
The league presents the NBA Community Assist Award monthly to recognize players for their charitable efforts. The award honors the NBA player who best reflects the passion that the league and its players have for giving back to their communities.

Just in time for Madden!! Microsoft Unveils Its New 60 GB Xbox Console

Starting with August 15, the new 60 Giga Bytes Xbox 360 console will be available in the United Kingdom. The price announced for the new release remains the same as before at £199 and it will replace the 20 GB Pro package as the mid-range Xbox Stock-keeping unit.
The decision to develop a console with significantly more space came naturally for the company and Mr. Neil Thompson, senior regional director of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, managed to explain it best: " No other device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver and we know consumers need increasingly more and more space to store the amazing digital entertainment content we provide." He also underlined the fact that users will now be able to enjoy the extra space at no extra cost.
The company included in its offer a wireless controller, a headset and one month subscription to Xbox Live Gold.
The rest of the company’s offer remains the same, with the Xbox 360 Arcade, which includes a 256 MB memory card but no hard drive, selling for £159.99 and the Xbox 360Elite with its 120 GB selling for £259.99.
Another version, this time with an 80 GB hard drive, is also scheduled for release later this month on August 29 at the price of £299.99.
The Xbox 360 was first presented on May 12, 2005 during a show on MTV and since then it reached immense global popularity with its three available versions. The company is constantly looking for new ways to top its main competitors, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii.

Samantha Morton Backs Volunteering For Charity
A couple of years ago, British actress Samantha Morton loaned her voice to A National Voice (ANV). Now it’s resonating through Vodafone’s World of Difference campaign.
Impressed that ANV – whose goal is to address the lack of support for the over 60,000young people in care in the UK – was founded by a local woman literally out of a room in her flat, Morton contacted the charity to see how she could help.
One of the young members was equally impressed with Morton: “We got to interview [Samantha] to be an Ambassador for ANV and she was so lovely. She talked to us about her experiences being in care. It was an amazing experience to meet her.”
Then Morton and ANV helped launch the World of Difference, Vodafone’s campaign to financially support volunteers to give up their day jobs to work for a charity of their choices for a year.
“I feel really passionate about helping children and young people who are in the care system,” said Morton. “I support A National Voice as it aims to make positive changes to the care system in the UK and gives a voice to those being cared for. The World of Difference project gives people the opportunity to work with their own favorite charity – I’ve seen first hand what a difference an extra pair of hands can make… It just seemed to me that I understood the ethos behind it.”
Acceptance of applications to the World of Difference campaign ended July 31. The four winning volunteers will be announced in September.

Kanye West has a treat for all the West Coasters in Chicago: The rapper’s KW Foods LLC got a license to open 10 Fatburger restaurants in his hometown, Chicago Business reported.
According to a spokesperson of Fatburger Corp., Kanye West’s KW Foods LLC, has the rights to develop 10 Fatburgers in Chicago area!
The first burger joint is set to open up in September (date to be determined) at 15110 S. La Grange Road- Orland Park. The 2,353-square-foot fast-food will feature 74seats. He hopes to open a second Fatburger in January 95th and Western Avenue- Evergreen Park in Beverly neighborhood. He also has a spot picked for the third location, but the lease has yet to be finalized. A spokesperson for the burger chain confirmed Kanye’s plans. Kanye West’s 10 restaurants will join the 93 Fatburger outlets that already exist across the US and Canada.
The restaurants maintain that old-fashioned atmosphere, with three jukeboxes (will they all play hip-hop music?) and the famous slogan “The Last Great Hamburger Stand.”
Fatburger is a California burger institution and is In-N-Out Burger’s biggest competition. And, well, we all know how much Kanye likes a little competition.
Fatburger, which primarily calls California home, is a popular fast-food chain. This will be the first restaurant in Chicago.
It appears that hip hop and Fatburger have a longer history together, which goes beyond West entrepreneurial approach. Notorious BIG and Ice Cube had their rhymes, rapping about the burgers, moreover, Beastie Boys had their own lyrics dedicated to the tasty food. Also, it is rumored that Queen Latifah and E-40 own franchises as well, while Pharrell Williams’ outlet competes with the Chinese gastronomic tradition in nowhere else but China.
In the meantime, Kanye West is reportedly going back in the studio to prepare some new material. His last released album is called “Graduation.” Reports state that the rapper is currently working with Jay-Z, preparing the release of his forthcoming album, “Blueprint 3.” Leaks on the internet revealed that one of the tracks on the album is titled “Jockin' Jay-Z.” Although the media rumored that Kanye West is to produce the greatest part of Jay-Z’s album, neither part has confirmed or denied the allegations.

Oprah to head to Denver for Obama nomination

From CNN's Victoria Riess
Oprah hit the trail for Obama during the primary season.
(CNN) — Oprah Winfrey will be on hand when Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination in Denver – but the talk show host, who was a key presence at rallies for the Illinois senator during the primary season, won’t take the stage, a representative from her production company told CNN Wednesday.
The spokeswoman also denied rumors Winfrey was planning to spend thousands renting a home in Denver during the convention.
In June, shortly after Obama effectively clinched the Democratic nomination, Winfrey – who appeared with him in several key early-voting states, including Iowa, New Hampshire and California – said she was "euphoric” over his victory.
“I've been doing the happy dance all day,” she said in a statement then. “I'm so proud of Barack and Michelle and what this means for all of us, the new possibilities for our country.”
She added that she’d be happy to hit the trail again on his behalf: “And if he wants me to, I'm ready to go door to door."

Olympian makes a splash

NEWARK, N.J. – The John F. Kennedy Pool and Recreation Center straddles nearly an entire block in a city neighborhood where it is not uncommon to find new housing stock standing cheek by jowl with abandoned buildings and empty lots strewn with debris.
In the standard American sports narrative, this is not where Olympic swimming champions are nurtured – at least, until now.
ASSOCIATED PRESS/BOB BUKATY
Cullen Jones, left, changes to teammate Nathan Adrian in a men’s 4x100 meter freesyle relay heat in the National Aquatic Center at the Beijing Olympics Aug. 9. Jones, who trains and lives in Charlotte, is the second African American to earn an Olympic gold medal in swimming.
It was here that Cullen Jones learned to swim competitively and first professed his Olympic ambitions. And it was here on Monday that friends and former teammates celebrated his gold medal-winning performance on the U.S. men's 400 meter relay team.
The victory, in a pulsating race that was in doubt until U.S. anchor Jason Lezak touched the wall a whisker in front of France's Alain Bernard, made Jones only the second African-American swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal, after Anthony Ervin in 2000.
“He was one of the good ones who came out of here,'' Moustapha Kamara, a swimming instructor and supervisor at the Kennedy center, said Monday. “It's a very proud feeling knowing that someone from here is coming home with the gold. It was overwhelming to actually see it.''
Jones, 24, who lives in Charlotte and was a star swimmer at N.C. State University, was born in the Bronx and grew up next door to Newark in Irvington, a city with a reputation for crime and violence that tends to overshadow most other news. He gravitated to the Kennedy center as a youth and competed on the local swim team there, impressing teammates with his work ethic.
Brennon Smith grew up across the street from the pool at a time when, he said, few people used it even though it was one of the only public recreation facilities in the area. Jones was a fixture there, and eventually his enthusiasm rubbed off on Smith.
“Even if no else was there, he'd be in there practicing,'' Smith said. “Watching how passionate he was about it got me into swimming. He was a great role model, always trying to help someone out.''
Jones returned to Newark last fall to promote a water safety program for urban children, an initiative spurred by a study by the Centers for Disease Control that showed the rate of drowning deaths for blacks between ages 10 and 19 was nearly three times that of whites.
The issue has personal relevance for Jones, who often tells the story of how he nearly drowned at age 5 when the inner tube he was riding at an amusement park flipped over and trapped him underwater.
The experience couldn't keep Jones away from the water, and he arrived at Newark's St. Benedict's Prep last fall already on a mission.
“He was already talking about making the Olympics when he got here,'' St. Benedict's coach Glenn Cassidy recalled Monday. “We could tell he had a lot of talent, and that he had the drive to do it.''
Cassidy remembers Jones as a personable but quiet youth who eventually matured both in and out of the pool and earned a leadership position that gave him the responsibility of overseeing 25 or 30 other students each day.
For Cassidy, who said the U.S. team's victory had him “jumping up and down, screaming and crying at the same time,'' Jones' accomplishment should not be underestimated.
“It's about breaking stereotypes,'' he said. “For people to see someone of color who can stand out in a nontraditional area in a role that is positive, is tremendous.''

Julius Peppers is BACK!!!
Published Thursday, August 14, 2008
by Mike Cranston, The Associated Press
Julius Peppers broke out of his slumber and was dominant again. DeAngelo Williams made a case to start by darting through giant holes opened by the new, mammoth offensive line.
Jake Delhomme had no setbacks from his elbow surgery. Steve Smith made another spectacular catch – and kept his hands off his teammates.
The impressive showing by Carolina's first team in the Panthers' 23-20 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts in Saturday's preseason opener gave reason for optimism –and wariness.
“It was just nice to have both sides of the ball operating efficiently to start the game,'' left tackle Jordan Gross said.
But the Panthers have done this before. They are 17-8 in exhibitions under coach John Fox and have won six straight preseason openers. The offense has scored on its first possession three straight years.
It didn't translate to the regular season the last two years, with the 8-8 and 7-9 records putting plenty of pressure on Fox and the Panthers to produce this year.
Still, the early signs against a makeshift Colts team missing Peyton Manning, Dwight Freeney and Bob Sanders were clearly encouraging.
Peppers, who lacked energy, speed and strength last season, was all over the field and embarrassed Colts left tackle Tony Ugoh in his first start since moving to right defensive end. Peppers recorded a sack, a forced fumble and a hurry that led Jim Sorgi to throw an interception on the first two series.
Williams turned both turnovers into touchdowns runs for a 14-0 lead barely three minutes into the game.
“He's all the way back,'' linebacker Thomas Davis said of Peppers. “You can say something was wrong with him, but he hasn't missed a beat this year.''
Delhomme has looked fully recovered from ligament-replacement surgery in practice, but threw only one pass in his preseason debut, an incompletion.
Instead, the Panthers turned to Williams on both of their short drives after the turnovers. Williams carried nine times for 55 yards and two TDs.
“He ran great. He broke tackles,'' Delhomme said. “I think this year we will be able to see for certain what DeAngelo Williams can do.''
He took the early lead over rookie Jonathan Stewart in the competition for the starting job. Stewart spent the game in street clothes, another troubling sign as the first-round pick takes a long time to recover from offseason toe surgery.
“The doctors here know what they're doing,'' Stewart said. “I just put my trust in them.''
Williams and Stewart are expected to get plenty of carries behind a line that features a different player at all five positions. Their debut was impressive as the Panthers try to return to a consistent running game missing since their Super Bowl season in 2003.
“I think we made great moves in the offseason,'' center Ryan Kalil said. “Coach Fox and (GM) Marty Hurney did a great job of bringing in guys who are big. We talked about beefing up the offensive line.''
A balanced offense could bring more opportunities for the Panthers top playmaker, the volatile Smith. Just over a week after Smith broke cornerback Ken Lucas' nose in practice and was suspended for the first two regular-season games, Smith made an impressive leaping catch for a 19-yard gain before his abbreviated night ended.
Even Dwayne Jarrett, who had a difficult rookie season and was mocked by Smith late last year, had three catches for 43 yards. Twice he held onto passes from backup Matt Moore after being hit hard.
“The offensive line did a great job in protection. The quarterback went through his progressions and I was wide open,'' Jarrett said. “I just made the play. It felt great, but we're still trying to get better.''
The teamwork angle was being worked by many players after the marathon game ended late Saturday night with John Kasay's 46-yard field goal with 3:53 left in overtime.
But there's reason to be cautious in the praise. Five defensive starters missed the game, with the secondary especially hard hit with injuries in training cap. Lucas still needs to return from surgery on his nose, and the offensive must prove it can be consistent.
Last year, the Panthers went on an 81-yard touchdown drive in their first preseason game against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. They looked awful the next week in Philadelphia, a sign of things to come. On Thursday, the Panthers visit the Eagles.
“Last year we went up to Philly and we laid an egg. We were awful,'' Delhomme said. “So we have to go back to work.''

Obama campaign unveils second Olympics ad
From CNN Associate Political Editor Rebecca Sinderbrand
Obama is set to release its second Olympics spot on Monday.
(CNN) — Barack Obama’s campaign unveiled its second Olympics spot Thursday, another economy-focused ad aimed at middle class voters.
The ad, Three Bedroom Ranch, will air on national cable and broadcast television in all 50 states beginning next Monday.
“A plan to build. A plan to put hard working Americans first,” says the announcer in the 30-second spot, over footage of a house being constructed. “He’ll put the middle class ahead of Corporate Interests to grow the economy. End tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. Help businesses that create jobs here. Invest in education. Cut taxes for working families. And make energy independence an urgent national priority.”
Obama’s first Olympics buy was another positive spot, focused on his “green jobs” policy proposals.
During the same period, his campaign has also released tough local radio spots attacking opponent John McCain as he visits manufacturing communities in battleground states, including an ad that said the presumptive Republican nominee and his campaign manager Rick Davis were partly responsible for the potential loss of thousands of Ohio jobs, and another that painted him as uninterested in protecting motorcycle manufacturing jobs. That ad was timed to coincide with his trip to York, Pennsylvania, site of a major Harley-Davidson plant.

Nike Clark Kents: Bejing 2008

Pre-Olympic fever delivered a whole range of fashion. Now that the Olympics have started, will designers be influenced by what they see in Beijing? I say yes. The Olympic Opening Ceremony was sure to have inspired some outrageous new design ideas in fashion and gadgets and even toys.
First out the box are these one-off DJ Clark Kent sneakers called “Beijing 2008 And The Winner Is…” They are Nike Air Force Ones that make use of the metallic trilogy of gold, silver and bronze reflected on the Olympic podiums.

Jonas Brothers!!
NEW YORK — The sounds of thunder and early-evening traffic were easily drowned out by the squeals of hundreds of fans gathered outside the Apple Store downtown on Tuesday. They were all eagerly waiting to see a free performance by the
Jonas Brothers, whose third album (and second with Disney's Hollywood Records), A Little Bit Longer, was released the same day.
Many fans had been waiting on the sidewalk for a long time. Julie Forkell and daughters Brooke, Hannah and Abby drove in from Philadelphia and were in line since Monday. "I've never done anything like this before," said 11-year-old Hannah. "It's actually been really fun. We've been listening to our iPods, and I slept for a lot of the time. We've been just keeping each other busy." Nine-year-old Abby was a little less patient. "It seems like [time] goes by so slow, because I'm so excited!"
Mom Julie said she used the experience to bond with her children. "I really like spending time with my kids. They're really good girls, and the Jonas Brothers are just awesome. They're darlings." And, as Julie pointed out, they're very photogenic. "They make extremely wonderful wallpaper. As in, 'Let's cover up our freshly painted blue bedroom with about 10,000 magazine pictures of Nick and the gang!' "
About an hour before the performance was scheduled to start, the skies over Manhattan opened up, and a hard rain poured down on the fans for a solid 10 minutes. Twenty-two-year-old Ginno Murphy, wearing a garbage bag to keep dry, thought it was all worthwhile. "It's kind of cool to be a part of it. It's good to see people so excited about a band."
Shortly before 8 p.m., the doors to the Apple Store were opened wide and fans were allowed in, one small group at a time. More than 500 audience members took their places on the second floor of the store — a lucky few were able to score seats directly in front of the stage, and the rest had to stand, corralled by the store's employees.
When Nick, Joe and Kevin finally appeared, the place went wild. There was plenty of screaming and also a bit of crying. The brothers hit the stage along with their backup musicians, and after a brief thank-you to the fans from Joe, they launched into "That's Just the Way We Roll" from their self-titled second album. About an hour's worth of pop-rock music followed, including songs from all three JB albums.
During the opening bars of "Year 3000," the band started to jump up and down in unison, and the fans did the same. The entire floor shook, and for a brief moment, this reporter thought the whole thing would come crashing down onto the first level below.
Things calmed down a bit when Nick, usually seen strapped to his guitar, sat down at a piano to sing the title track from A Little Bit Longer, about what he experienced when he was first diagnosed with diabetes. "I want you to sing this with me as loud as you can," Nick told the audience mid-song. Of course, they obliged.
The performance ended with a lively rendition of "Burnin' Up," the first single from the new album. Then the brothers left, with the audience filing out shortly after.
"It was awesome," 19-year-old Christine Soto said of the performance. Her best friend Lauren Kwong added: "It was worth the 12-hour wait!"
Fans who were unable to attend the event can download the performance on iTunes, but they'll have to hold out for a while: It won't be available until the holidays.

Through its sponsorship of the benefit party, which took place on Wednesday, Aug. 6, more families will be able to receive free health screenings and more children will receive backpacks and school supplies to kick off the school year. That night, Rick Ross gave an impromptu, 45-minute performance (after jumping up onto the highest bed) of mostly all of his songs, which the fans loved him for. The crowd joined in and sang along in the background. Of course, he came with celebrity friends, including Webbie, Mass Pike Myles (of Ross' own label Mayback Music), Torch and recording artist Brisco of Poe Boy Entertainment. Even White Boy from VH1's " I Love New York 2," was in the house. Visit http://files.noisemarketing.com/bombay to see photos.
BOMBAY SAPPHIRE rewarded Ross' hard work and quenched his thirst and those of the fans with a VIP cocktail hour presentation featuring specialty drinks, such as the " Miami Breeze" and the " Sapphire Collins." But more importantly, BOMBAY SAPPHIRE supported positivity and Rick Ross' community service efforts and was honored to highlight his accomplishments by sponsoring the good ol' fashioned, fundraising, fun jam with MCs on the mike. Tracy Morgan Returns As Host of The 2008 "VH1 Hip Hop Honors"
Which Premieres On VH1 and VH1 Soul on Tuesday, October 7 at 10PM*
NEW YORK, August 13, 2008 – VH1 has announced the five honorees for their fifth annual "VH1 Hip Hop Honors," Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Slick Rick, Naughty By Nature and Too $hort. Hosted once again by Tracy Morgan, this year's musical celebration will give viewers a chance to step back and reminisce on a time when hip hop music began to make its greatest impact on American pop culture.
Premiering on Tuesday, October 7 at 10PM*, generations of hip hop will bridge the gap for one exceptional night to set it off with the original style and flavor that sparked a revolution and continues to fuel an evolution around the world. Additional performances and appearances will be announced shortly.
"Now in its fifth year, the 'VH1 Hip Hop Honors' has come to represent the pinnacle of innovation and achievement in hip hop music," said Tom Calderone, Executive Vice President and General Manager, VH1. "This year's five honorees are no different and are being recognized for their significant contributions to hip hop culture and for helping to elevate hip hop into a truly global phenomenon."
Introducing this year's honorees:
Cypress Hill: With a driving rhyme style and brutally infectious production, this L.A. based collective brought a welcomed Latino perspective to hip hop storytelling, creating records like "Insane in the Brain" that crossed all barriers and gave Cypress Hill fans in the rock, as well as, rap world.
De La Soul: This Long Island trio brought a playful, smart, and off-center style to hip hop, while pushing their suburban and bohemian sensibility to the fore. Their innovative sound has influenced not only other MCs, but helped inspire the entire underground movement in the culture.
Naughty By Nature: Led by the strident style of lead MC Treach, Naughty By Nature brought New Jersey hip hop into the mainstream by creating hit singles than became anthems for a generation. "OPP" and "Hip Hop Hooray" are two of the most popular records in rap history.
Slick Rick: With vivid storytelling and unique rhyme style Slick Rick has always been one of the most unique and influential figures in the culture's history. When you combine Rick's MC gifts with his gold chains, eye patch and regal clothing the result is a figure who embodies the fun, the danger and the flavor that is hip hop.
Too $hort: Too $hort started his career in the '80s selling 12-inch singles full of freaky tales on his own indie label in Oakland and has remained true to his raw style, in the process becoming a legend in the game while staying true to his hard core values.
